Emergency Preparedness for Business

In case of an emergency, a proactive plan can make all the difference for you and your employees. Take some time to familiarize yourself with these suggestions, and start making an action plan to keep your business and your people safe.

General Emergency Preparation

The best way to stay safe is to make a plan ahead of time and make sure all your employees have it. Make sure to include necessary actions for any elderly or handicapped employees.

    • A place outside your business

  • Practice the plan with your employees

  • Plan safe routes away from your business to high, safe ground.

  • Prepare an emergency kit with at least 3 days of water and non-perishable food for all of your employees

In Case of Electric Line Contact or Down/Broken Power Lines

  • Call 911.

  • If an accident causes a fire, fight it with a dry chemical or CO2 extinguisher.

  • If possible, shut off the power.

  • Don’t touch the person or any equipment involved. The line may still be energized and dangerous.

  • Freeing someone from energized power lines or equipment should only be attempted by a qualified SDG&E employee or a trained rescuer such as a fire fighter.

  • Always assume that power lines are energized unless you personally know they have been disconnected, and that they could not be reconnected without your knowledge.

Shutting off Your Gas

If you suspect a gas emergency, or have questions regarding a gas odor or carbon monoxide, call us immediately a 1-800-411-7343.

Para apagar el gas que:

  1. Locate the shut-off valve. As you face your meter, you will see a pipe running from the ground to the meter and approximately 6-8 inches above the ground there is a shut-off valve running parallel to the pipe.

  2. Using a 12-inch or larger adjustable wrench, turn the valve ¼ turn in either direction, until the valve is crosswise to the pipe.

  3. DO NOT turn off your meter unless you smell gas, hear the sound of gas or see other signs of a gas leak.

Apagar su electricidad

Always know in advance where your electricity panel is located in case of emergency.

If your house has circuit breakers: Open the metal door of the breaker box to reveal the circuit breakers. The main breaker should be clearly marked showing ‘ON’ and ‘OFF’ positions. Turn off all the small breakers first, then shut off the ‘MAIN.’

If you have any sub-electrical panels, shut those off, too.
